WHAT CLOTHES DOES A NEWBORN BABY NEED?

WHAT CLOTHES DOES A NEWBORN BABY NEED?

When shopping for a newborn, make sure the baby’s comfort and ease of changing is the priority. Fashion should be your second priority although it’s possible to find cute and fashionable baby outfits that are also convenient, comfortable and practical. In general, when shopping for clothing for your baby girl or baby boy remember to look for outfits that are made of soft, easy-care fabrics. Velour outfits or fleece outfits are great choice for your baby’s Winter wardrobe. They will keep your baby snugly and toasty. Cotton clothing is always an excellent choice - but make sure you check the exact percentage of cotton before you buy your baby’s clothes. Any outfits that stay in direct contact with baby’s skin should have no less than 80% cotton. Otherwise, the clothes are likely to make your baby sweaty and uncomfortable. Try not to buy too much baby clothing size 0-3months. You will be surprised how quickly your baby will outgrow these 0-3 months outfits. Most 0-3 months size newborn clothes will fit your baby up to 10 lbs. If you know he or she will be a relatively big baby, focus on clothes 3-6 months. You can always roll up the sleeves. Other features to look for in baby clothing: ŕ roomy head openings or snaps at the neck ŕ outfits that have snaps on the bottom for convenient diaper changing ŕ room for growth: adjustable shoulder straps in coveralls, pants or shirts that can be rolled up.

HOW MANY OF WHAT CLOTHING ITEMS WILL MY BABY NEED?

3-7 UNDERSHIRTS (ONESIES, BODYSUITS)

Lots of moms prefer the snap-bottom body shirts for the reason that they prevent our baby’s back and tummy from being exposed in cold weather. The shirts that do not have the snaps easily ride up every time you pick your baby up.

3-7 NIGHTGOWNS WITH ELASTICIZED BOTTOMS

Baby nightgowns give you ease of diaper changing at night. A great choice is a nightgown with built-in mittens that protect your baby’s face from being scratched.

2-3 BABY SLEEP SACK (BABY SLEEPING BAG, COSI BAG)

Baby sleep sacks are an excellent alternative for comforters and blankets. You do not have to worry about your baby getting cold at night or loose blankets that may lead to suffocation. You can choose between sleeveless baby sleep sacks or the ones with the sleeves, depending on the season.

4-7 FOOTED COVERALLS (STRETCHIES, FOOTSIES)

You will need more footed coveralls for a Fall/Winter baby. Cotton is a great choice for comfy baby playwear. Make sure you select the ones that open on the bottom for convenient diaper changing.

4-7 ROMPERS (SUNSUITS)

You will need more rompers for a late Spring or Summer baby. Rompers are mostly short sleeved outfits with snaps at the crotch for easy diaper changing.

3-6 PAIRS OF BABY SOCKS OR BOOTIES

Socks are more practical than booties since they are less likely to get kicked off. The number of pairs you will need will depend on what baby outfits you have. If you have a lot of pant sets or coveralls you will need more socks. If you chose to use footed coveralls for your baby , the socks will not be necessary.

7-9 BIBS

You will need bibs to protect your baby’s clothing from spit-up. You will need bibs even more after you introduce your baby to solid foods.

1-3 SWEATERS. You should not need more than one lightweight sweater for the Summer, but they will come in really handy in Fall and Winter.

1-3 HATS

For the Summer, hats with a wide rim and a neck flap are recommended for sun protection. You will need heavier weight hats in Fall and Winter. Hats with ear flaps are recommended. Also look for a hat that has a chin tie.

1 SNOWSUIT

Select a footed baby snowsuit with attached mittens and a hood.

3-6 RECEIVING BLANKETS

After birth babies like to be snuggled real tight in a blanket. It gives them a sense of security. Cotton receiving blankets will allow you to wrap your baby for comfort and warmth.

2-3 TERRY CLOTH BABY TOWELS

The towels with a hood are not only cute but also very convenient. The hood will cover your baby’s wet head to keep it warm.

1 HOMECOMING OUTFIT

Do not forget about that special outfit you will pick to take your baby home. Lots of pictures will be taken on this special day and you will want your baby to be dressed up for this occasion.

Also consider how many times a week you are planning to do the laundry. If you choose to do it once a week the number of outfits you will need will be greater. If you do think you will be able to do laundry a couple times a week you will probably need smaller amount of baby clothes. Although a newborn baby does very littlr throughout the day (sleep & eat) they sometimes will need to have their clothes changed 3 times!
